@hermann the building "de Sluyswacht" is the only building of the once poorest Jewish neighbourhood of Amsterdam that is still standing. (The building was made a monument in the late 1960's). At that time the neighbourhood was demolished to make way for the currently only metro tunnel in operation. The demolishment didn't went well with the people of Amsterdam and wide spread riots broke out. Which resulted in that all plans which involved the further demolishment of old buildings were stopped. The city council had planned a highway through the city and more metro lines. It took until now and new techniques to start building a second metro tunnel which will be opened in 2017. @regularguy Mind you the bicycles are parked illegally along the railing of the sluice. On the opposite side near the Rembrandt house there bicycle stands. But the big building the right is the Amsterdam University of the Arts. So lots of students and just as much bicycles, so never a place to park legally. Although one can wonder if that makes any difference to the students. ;-)
