You can still see the wrecks of the block ships that were once used to block the channel into Scapa Flow. In 1939, a German U-Boat made its way past them and torpedoed the HMS Royal Oak lying at anchor. In response, Churchill ordered that permanent barriers into Scapa Flow be constructed. Today they form a series of causeways linking five islands together
