My girlfriend and I visited the abandoned Taras Schevchenko museum and memorial park in northern Oakville today. The place is peaceful but oddly creepy. I recently learned that the museum and park has been closed since 1988 due to vandalism, and that in 2006 the 20 ton statue that used to sit on this monument was stolen. They retrieved the head from a foundry in Burlington and to their surprise it was practically unscathed. The head of the statue now resides in a Toronto museum and this is all that's left of what used to be a proud and glorious testament to one of the world's great poets.
