My Em turned 7 a week ago. I took this portrait of her on her actual birthday, but didn't download it that day or get around to showing it to her for a few days, so I post it a week late.
She is in her new birthday dress that we got her. It had this adorable zebra striped belt that she took off and conveniently left at school. Luckily it was still at school and she got it back this week.
I sent her off to school in tears today. My Emily, so full of emotion and drama. She's a tough one, my girl. When she is happy, life is beautiful. When she is not, watch out. Unfortunately it seems that she is not happy more than she is. She is a glass half empty kinda kid. I hope that I can figure out how to help her become more positive and joy filled. Our lives, her life and the world will be a better place!
Stunningly cute, cute, cute. I bet that belt is rockin! I have a child who is very similar. She is now in 6th grade. When tears roll, the world stops for a good long second for me--it's really tough. Glasses at half are hard--they are. It gets better. :)
What's clear in this shot is her potential to be and stay happy. What a wonderful image with such joy that comes through. All the best in her journey so that the happy begins to outweigh the not so great days.
Awww what a gorgeous portrait of your beautiful girl. Love the way she's holding up her fingers, you'll always remember which birthday it was taken at now :)
She is totally beautiful and happy here! I had one that went through a stage (a long one) like that. He is now a very happy well adjusted grown up...but still much more serious then his younger brother. I only wish he had a better sense of humor.... She'll be great...and she is adorable!
Quick question about the lighting. The sun looks to be about 10-11 o'clock position slightly behind her that would result in backlighting...is that right? And if so, did you use any fill flash or is this just the natural lighting? It's such soft lighting with barely any shadowing and I'm trying to learn how to get better/consistent lighting. Thanks!
@rellimdj My flash doesn't work, Joe, or I haven't figured it out. I just go with all natural. I dropped my camera months back and am assuming that I broke the flash? But perhaps I just don't know what I am doing and it doesn't charge. It just never fires when I try to use it. I should probably someday get an external flash. The time here was around 4:00. I want to master light and so wish I could do so with flash when needed!
@amandal Well pffffttt...if you keep taking shots like that forget the flash then...the lighting looks professional to me. So soft and even, perfectly exposed. Good stuff. I'll keep practicing. :)
@rellimdj Really, really appreciate your kind words and compliment, Joe. I recently, though my photoclub learned how to adjust the exposure compensation to help with darker lighting. I think that I adjusted it brighter by 0.3 here. Have you used that feature yet. Love learning new tricks!!!
she is adorable =) and happy belated birthday to both of you =))) oh, and thank you for explanation about the belt, before reading the capture, it was bugging me =D
Happy birthday :)
@paulaw She did. Thanks so much, Paula. Can't wait to blend some of it into our smoothie tomorrow.
@darylo Thanks for the sweet words and encouragement, Daryl!! Congrats on PP with your sweet squirrel, too!
Really appreciate all of your thoughtful comments about my girl. Thank you so much and hope that you are having a super weekend!

I really appreciate your sweet comments and encouragement about my drama daughter. I love her so. We had less of a dramatic weekend, thankfully!!!
@mariyakey Was it really?! I'm so annoyed by stuff like that. Thanks, lady. If you were being sarcastic, you are funny.
