Battle of Cable Street by andycoleborn

Battle of Cable Street

This mural commemorates the battle of Cable Street which took place back in October 1936 in Shadwell, East London.

Apparently, something like 40,000 of Oswald Mosley's Fascist Black Shirts attempted to march through the East End, which was a mainly Jewish area at the time, where they were met by up to 300,000 anti-fascists and communists! Over 10,000 police were on hand but it didn't stop a series of running battles breaking out throughtout the day.

The march was intended to whip up anti-Jewish and pro-German sympathies.

This mural was painted on the side of the old town hall in Cable Street in the early 1980s.

Problems logging on at home mean I'm uploading during my lunch break...
What an intense mural! Regarding the subject matter, all I can think is, "That didn't turn out well..."
