Barbican by andycoleborn

Barbican

Have been inspired by some great architecture photos on here (especially Brandon's work http://365project.org/bdoran/365/2010-08-17) to have a go myself, so after work I walked to the Barbican. Those not familiar with the Barbican, it's a huge concrete jungle.

Not sure wether it's moderism, post-modernism, functionalism or brutaliam or all four! What it is though is over 2,000 flats in many blocks, lots of which are connected by walkways (concrete of course) and includes arts centres, shops, cafes, and plenty of open space.

The grounds are starkly landscaped, all hard straight lines and not a curve in sight. Built during the 1960s when concrete high rises were all the rage where everyone in the future would be living in cities in the sky..

The estate is mainly private and a very expensive. If it was social housing, it would have been knocked down by now.

This wasn't the picture I wanted to upload, but wasn't happy with what I planned to use, although this gives a decent idea of the style of housing here. Truth be told, I wasn't sure exactly where to start to get the best out of the buildings, still, will consider it a learning curve... A few more here http://andycphotos.shutterfly.com/526

It does remind me of the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth - before they knocked that down that is...

This is my 299th photo!!! I cannot believe I've taken a photo everyday for 299 days... Although thinking about, some days I reckon I take 299 photos!!!
Cool shot. I liked the window cleaning one too, but I do not think I would want that job.

Very urban and gritty with the rain puddles and all. I like it! Is the Barbican where the Museum of London is located? I love that museum and got a great book on the archealogy of the area.

Thanks everyone and agree, the windows are deceptive aren't they... but they aren't upside down, neither is there any reflection... These are subterranean 2 story flats with a lake going directly up to the building wall. The domed area at the top is some sort of private communal area. There are no windows at the front if I remember correctly apart from the front door.

I really like this series you photographed. Checked it out on shutterfly. You have a great eye that brought out the architecture of this compound. Really like your style of capturing images. Nice work.
