Stopped of at mum's after football - restocked her freezer and shared a pizza...
Had a good old chat about mum's youth growing up in Berlin before and during the war.. Heard some interesting stuff..
Two of mum's brothers died on the retreat from Russia (Or running away from the Russian's as mum put it...!) whilst her other brother was in the special forces but somehow managed to go through the whole war without seeing any action - Apparently he was stationed a lot in France and always returned wih silks and perfumes..
Mum grew up in a Communist part of Berlin and her two older sisters were fervant Reds and frequently got into scraps with the Nazi party before joining the Communist Underground Army during the war..(I knew one of mum's sisters was a communist as she chose to live in East Berlin when the wall went up..)
Mum also told me, as a 16/17 year old she worked in Lancaster House in 1946 as a cleaner - This was the British HQ between 1945 and 1954 - She said the building had a secret floor, where the lift by-passed but she cleaned on this floor always under armed guard as all the secrets and deals were done here..
She was picked as she couldn't English... She could.. but she didn't let on... I asked if she ever read anything and she smiled and said of course...
All sounds very James Bond...
As for football... We lost again to Torquay - a team in the bottom two... Highlight of the game.. A fox running on to the pitch in the 2nd half..
