A son for us all

This is the war memorial in our church that holds the name of Second Lieutentant Horace Arthur Seel. He means a lot to me as, a few years ago, James and I chose a name at random from the war memorial names in his school and researched the young man so that James could have a better appreciation of what Remembrance Day is all about.

H.A.Seel, known as Arthur, died on December 7th 1915 in Gallipoli, Turkey. We found him recorded on the school memorial, the memorial in our church, Jesus College, Oxford where he had just begun studying, our Town Hall, the war memorial on our town's cenotaph and the Helles Memorial in Turkey. In James' school, we uncovered that he had been a keen sportsman, actor, academic and Head Boy. He was killed on his first day in the trenches as he was checking that the men in his command had taken cover after some heavy shelling and his death hit the school hard, being the first they had experienced but also of a boy who had been so well known.

What a great way of bringing home the meaning of remembrance day. I'll take this idea, and when my grandson is old enough to appreciate the information i'll do the same. Maybe in time he'll do the same.
