Sending love to the home front

We suspended all lessons at school today to run a 1 off series of events to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War. We had many visitors from the armed forces who ran some basic training to ladies from the Women's Institute who cooked with groups to show them what it was like to be rationed with food. A colleague and myself ran a class where the students produced versions of the embroidered postcards soldiers used to send home from France. Given only 90 minutes, we sometimes had to encourage the girls to use fabric paint as well as newly learned embroidery skills but we were delighted with how they threw themselves into the task and quite what beautiful cards they produced at the end of it.
What a beautiful collage and a great idea. The students must have had a very fun and informative day.

Just outside living memory but what a wealth of information is out there from the First World War. A lovely tribute from the present young generation well captured with camera techniques which those involved would not have recognised.
