I have never before seen this mushroom, Slate grey saddle or Fluted black elfin saddle (Helvella lacunosa). It is rather common says the book of mushrooms and edible, too.
Wow, that is so very different from any other mushroom I've ever seen! Doesn't look very appetizing, but then I guess lots of different mushrooms are not pretty. Great photo! Love the intense dark color
