Thanks to advice from @quietpurplehaze and @frankhymus, I bought a used Sony a6000 mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. Took it to the park today for some practice shots. This young man was trying to learn how to dunk a basketball and let me take photos. This was with the 55-210mm lens. So far I am really happy with the camera, although my Sony HX400 has way more zoom power, so I'll hang on to that for bird photos.
@quietpurplehaze Thanks Hazel. I just put it on shutterspeed priority and cranked the shutterspeed up to 2000 and then shot him when he got near the basket. I was impressed at how well the camera autofocused.
