Blue Jay drinking

The blue jays seem to make a show of throwing their heads back to swallow water, or maybe it just stands out because they are so big.

All birds have to raise their beaks because they don't have striated muscles in their throats. This means that the throat muscles can't move food or water from the mouth to the stomach like our throats do, so they have to use gravity.
