Finally catching up on posting my shots from last Saturday! Had a wonderful day with my beautiful and gorgeous friends. Our schedules are not easy to co-ordinate, living a few hours apart, so we don't get to see each other often enough. Had a great relaxed day though, despite the bitter cold. Went for a visit to Woodhorn Colliery Museum and stuck mostly to the inside exhibitions. Got a tour of the Winding House, which held the big turbines responsible for moving cages up and down the mine shafts, going at 30 mph with miners cramped inside 12 lines deep, the length of the Eiffel tower!! Woodhorn Colliery closed down in 1981, 3 years before the big Miners strike in 1984. The last pit in Northumberland, a couple of miles up the road, closed in 2005. An industry that shaped the landscape and people in the region now nearly completely vanished! Woodhorn is a great place to gain a little glimpse of the not so distant past.
