After the defeat of the battle of Mohács (August 29, 1526), the Turkish armies raging in the country encountered the greatest resistance in the area of Marót settlement, located in the forests of Gerecse. The chariot camp of the fleeing crowd gathered at the estate of the archbishop of Esztergom was finally destroyed with cannons brought from the capital, and the Turkish armies carried out massacres in the area, claiming about 20-25,000 victims. The monument made by the sculptor György Kovács from Fertőhomok commemorates this terrible destruction.
