The old National Theater once stood in this place. The stone erected on the site of the building reminds us of this. The decision to demolish the building was made in 1963 with reference to the construction of the subway. The theater operated here until 1964, then on April 23, 1965, the building was blown up.
The new National Theater opened its doors on March 15, 2002, on the banks of the Danube. Until then, he was a guest in various places.
1837. augusztus 22-én még Pesti Magyar Színház néven nyitott meg, 1840. augusztus 8-án, Erkel Ferenc első operája, a Bátori Mária premierjével viszont felvette a Nemzeti Színház nevet, és gazdája Pest vármegye helyett az állam lett.
