A giant of a woodpecker by bruni

A giant of a woodpecker

We've never seen a woodpecker this size. you see the light looking sawed off branch, that is where his tail starts. Hans figured the bird is at east 16 inches in height.....quite big for a woodpecker.

A comment from Henri @henrir made me google woodpeckers. I found out it's a red-bellied woodpecker and it's shorter than I quoted. the tale is shorter than what we thought. google also mention it is found as far north as Canada. here is a link you can click on to see a variety of woodpeckers.

He is a very big woodpecker. I don't think I've seen one this size either. Most I see are much, much smaller. You got a great picture of him.

I tried to find one, but all I found similar was a Golden-fronted Woodpecker, mostly from Mexico and Texas. It did say it's average length was about 8-10 inches ... don't know if that included the length of his tail. The pictures looked very similar though. If that is what it is, he is really much further northeast than he should be.

Henri @henrir, thank you so much for your last comment. it made me google woodpeckers and you're right! what we called a redheaded woodpecker is actually red-bellied woodpecker and the tale is shorter than what we thought. google also said they are found as far north as Canada. the redheaded ones look completely different and I must say that I've never seen one, except now on pictures. I'll make mention of it in the picture I posted.I enclosed a link, hopefully you can open it. https://www.google.ca/search?biw=1179&bih=549&tbm=isch&q=pictures+of+woodpeckers&chips=q:pictures+of+woodpeckers,g_1:downy+woodpecker&sa=X&sqi=2&pjf=1&ved=0ahUKEwjV8vnK9JHVAhXL54MKHZ_UCtUQ4lYILigA
