Thank you all for following this series on mine. this one and then one more picture in my squirrel series. my question to you was who is who..female or male. no in my humble impression, I think the male is the larger and prettier one of the two. so looking at this picture, I think the one jumping off the branch is the male. but the, why is a female chasing a male. when I checked Wikipedia for mating seasons, they said mid summer and at the end of winter. February is not quite the end of winter here...at least another month.
I asked you what you thought of the gender of these two squirrels. let me tell you what I thought. I was always under the impression that the male is the larger and prettier. so in my humble opinion, I think the one jumping off is the male. but then, if it's already mating season, a female wouldn't chase the male. maybe, if she is .........oh oh, I almost said it.
The only time I've ever been able to tell was with my little peanut collecting friends. Buster (who is no longer with us) stood up one day and revealed himself to be what I expected- a boy. My new little friend was at first called Little Buster because "he" really acted just like "his" predecessor. But the other day, "he" too stood up and it was quite obvious that "he" was in fact a "she". I now call her Bester (kind of a combo of Buster and Esther). Unless you can see the belly or that tell-tale anatomy, it's hard to say what sex they are- well until they get the romance on!
