The old ways live on

This is a field not far from Mum and Dad's house. This is wheat which is cut whilst still green, it is left to dry and ripen on the stem in piles. It is then put through a reed comber to take the wheat corns off. The straw can then be used for thatching houses.

Dad used to cut this by hand as a boy, now it is done with machinery.
I bet it takes a lot less time these days!! Great shot of the piles. Like the pattern.

Great countryside scene. I don't think I have seen corn cut and left like this before. That's interesting that this is used for thatch, didn't know where that came from. Lovely shot.
