A couple of days ago,I came across an old CD,returned with film D and P,dating back to 2004.
I took Rosie and George's boys,Daniel and Emmanuel, from Kos to Sitanos,Crete,by ferry,to visit their Greek grandparents.
Sitanos is a typical Cretan village, situated in East Crete,620 metres above sea level.....beautiful in summer, but very cold in winter.
Walking around this lovely village,I felt quite sad,as it is only inhabited by the older generation nowadays. There is no work, apart from working the land and tending their animals. The young have all departed to the towns and abroad,so,as the older folk die,so does the village. The villagers are self-sufficient,although vans selling fresh produce, clothing and homewares, visit regularly. There are no shops, just the Kafenion and 2 churches. At one time only the Kafenion had a telephone. To get in touch with a villager, people would phone the Kafenion, who then used a loudspeaker to call the person to the phone. It is still close to my heart, although it's been a few years since last I visited. One of my memories was going outside at night and gazing at the myriad of stars....I have never seen so many.
Many thanks for all your views, comments and favs, always much appreciated.
What beautiful photos making up this fantastic collage. I agree with what someone said above, it is hard to believe that a place like this exists today and sad that as people die off so does the village. What a wonderful trip though for you and your grandsons and a beautiful place.
A lovely series of photos and a wonderful description of this beautiful place. There are too many places like this that are becoming ghost towns as the youth move into cities. So sad. I'm glad you captured this.
Splendid set of shots to show off the place. I enjoyed immensely reading your narrative. Unfortunately it is like that, everyone leaves the village to find their fortunes in the larger towns and cities.
