I had never seen one of these guys, until a month or so ago. When I looked it up and found out it was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, I knew I had to get a pic. I've heard the name all my life, but I didn't realize there really was a bird with the name.
Sapsuckers drill holes in trees and drink sap. They don't actually suck the sap. They lap it with their long tongues.
Thank you so much for your views, comments, and faves on my pics!!! :0)
I'm posting early, because we're going out to eat tonight. If I don't get to your pics tonight, I'll catch up tomorrow.
I was just reading about this bird today. My six year old "forced" me to buy "Wild About Northeastern Birds" when we visited the bird food store. Great picture. I love the contrast between the bokeh in the background and the stark lines of the bark.
He's gorgeous . . and there you go with the fabulous color and clarity again!! My dumb question for the day: Why is it called "yellow-bellied?" I don't see any yellow! lol :)
What a fantastic bird! I don't think I've ever seen one like this before. Interesting information too. I am amazed by your photography of our feathered friends!
