Ponte Sant'Angelo

On this day... 2011

It was my first day in Rome, Italy, and I ventured out to check out a street festival near Castel Sant'Angelo. As I walked along the Tiber River, I was in awe of the beautiful reflections that this bridge was giving the water.

A little bit of history... In 136 AD Emperor Hadrian ordered the construction of a new bridge over the Tiber River. The emperor wanted to connect his mausoleum - now the Castel Sant'Angelo - with the city of Rome across the river.
After the construction of the St. Peter's Basilica in the fourth century AD the bridge became known as St. Peter's Bridge, since it was on the main route towards the basilica. According to legend an archangel appeared on top of the mausoleum in 590 AD. Since then the bridge has been known as the Ponte Sant'Angelo (Bridge of the Holy Angel). Around the same time, the Mausoleum of Hadrian was renamed Castel Sant'Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel).
So while many people assume the bridge is named for the statues of angels on the bridge, the name in fact refers to the statue of the archangel which stands atop Castel Sant'Angelo.
Just beautiful! I visited years ago. Love everything about Italy. Hope you have a fabulous trip!
And absolutely Cindy when we get together again I will let you know. Fav!

Nice shot of a stunning bridge ~ like how the reflection completes the circle/oval on the water. Sure could spend more time in Rome ~ we were only there for part of a day while on a cruise ~ looks like a fascinating place. We went in the Coliseum and toured the Vatican ~ then had lunch somewhere, but that's all we had time for. Could EASILY go back there! :) (I think we went in 2009)

@sdutoit Agreed, Sylvia. Wish I could've stayed at least another week. I have to go back because I missed the Trevi Fountain.

@sitiodown Thanks Tari :) i just realized that I used my Nikon point & shoot for this photo. No editing besides a tiny crop at the top to tighten the shot. Sure would love to go back also!
