The Hills Hoist is a modern marvel.
I get frustrated when I hear of people not using the free, green clothes dryer that shines down on us each day for reasons such as "aesthetics". I believe some places in America even ban residents from drying their clothes on an external line for fear of a neighbour having to look upon someone else CLEAN laundry!
Clothes lines are great and the clothes smell so much fresher than when they come out of the dryer.
Not to mention the sun has it's own natural antibacterial affect on the laundry!
@maggiemae We have one that you can take out of the ground and put away when not in use if you want to do that. It has a cap that covers the bit that goes into the ground. Very cool, perfect for smaller areas too.
Mine is one of the older big non removable ones but now its on a lean because of years of children swinging on it but it still gets used nearly every day.
I'm with @ozziehoffy regarding the pegs
@corymbia@kjarn lol... I used to peg colour match in each quarter ahahaha.. now, I can't be arsed with that. I know they dry the same, but it's all about the shape etc. I hate when my towels and those items get out of square lol. As for swinging.... ooooooh yeah, the old ones rocked for that. Can't do it on the newies.
I like to see washing blowing in the wind and agree that clothes smell so fresh afterwards. I have a retractable clothes line. It depends on what I am hanging out as to the number of pegs I use, a lot of mine are wooden ones but I often colour co-ordinate the plastic ones
@kjarn@ozziehoffy@corymbia - seriously? 3 pegs for a towel? No way!!! I colour co-ord my pegs but it is according to the colour of the item of clothing. blue pegs for blue shirts etc, but sometimes I like to mix it up... white pegs for all the black socks, and wooden pegs just do my head in.
@bobfoto You know what, I really think, deep down, you are a peg coordinator. You probably also iron sheets and know how to fold a fitted sheet with military precision.
I'll stick with my engineer-approved method of 1-peg per small item and doubling up to save space. .....
@corymbia - when I was not so well funded as I am nowadays, I only had a limited number of pegs, and I would trudge to the laundromat, because I couldn't afford a washing machine of my own and I would only wash once a week. I would do a whole heap of laundry and then work out if I could a) have enough clothes line or b) have enough pegs.
On some days, I used 6 pegs or 4 shirts... and there was the time when I would hang 4 shirts and 6 socks/jocks on the 6 pegs. Needed good dry windy days for that.
@bobfoto I hang shirts / pants / skirts straight into coat hangers. ... and then off the curtain rail! Works even in FNQ.
.....and what's wrong with a good old twin tub from the council cleanup??? For many years, I had my own laundromat as Greg had collected a couple of washing machines from council cleanup, replaced the $10 fan belts and they worked fine. I bought my first washing machine after he died in 2010 because I couldn't replace the belt in the big machine when it wore out (and it was leaking).
Come to think of it, my fridge is also a rescue / restore job from Greg (from a known source though ... not from the dump this time!)
I USED to colour co-ordinate my pegs and clothing lol. Then there were the whole quarters with the same colour. I also used to hang shirts so they overlapped enough to use 3 pegs per 2 shirts or whatever it was.
Jason, what is wrong with 3 pegs for one towel? Stays in shape better! I HATE stretched out corners on my towels. lol.
@ozziehoffy I still reckon you have dodgy towels if they can go out of shape so easily ;)
I must admit I do quarters on the line ... but for a different reason... each person's clothes go on one quarter so that I can fold straight into the basket and then I can unload layers to each room as I go.
Efficiency is my middle name!
As for shirts, they go straight onto a hanger so I don't have to iron them.
@corymbia lol that was the reason I used to do quarters too, Amanda. But now I usually use the line under the back patio so I don't have to bring stuff in if it's not quite dry or I can hang it late and it doesn't matter. I do hang shirts first and then pants, so that when I take them off, the pants are folded and under the shirts so that they stack better in the basket.
My towels aren't dodgy... but if Andy hangs them and just puts a small bit overhanging then they do pull out of shape.
@corymbia@ozziehoffy@kjarn - what about throwing the towels over the line so it is at the halfway mark? No stretched out corners then? Sure it takes a little longer to dry....
@ozziehoffy@kjarn@bobfoto Ha! Who'd have thought this would generate such a discussion? @ozziehoffy I think I see what you mean - if he doesn't fold the top of the towel over and put the pegs on the bias bit it, could happen on a large towel. Never had that problem on mine though ....
@kjarn@corymbia@bobfoto I like the towels put over around the 1/8 or so mark lol... is that OCD enough? Actually, Jason, with the kids swimming towels, I do throw them over at the halfway mark.
Kathy, I used to do the same, but hubby got a bit blah blah and he likes scratchy towels... seriously... who likes scratchy towels!

... @munchkin84 more efficient by far!
