Who decides when leaves will turn
from green to yellow
and yellow to brown?

Who will know when leaves will fall
the week, the day
the day, the hour.

Who will hear them descend silently down
in dark or light
sun or rain?

Who will know precisely where they will lie,
and which ones will get kicked
by an exuberant foot?

And how long it will take them to decompose,
and become part of the ground
where a new tree grows?
