Ivor Novello collage Maidenhead

This photo collage is one of several dedicated to folk with local connections in 'The Bear' in Maidenhead. According to the information here it appears that, although been born in Cardiff, The Red Roofs Theatre school in Little Wick Green, not far from here, was his home for a time. In 1914 the song,' Keep the home fires burning' first made him famous and 'We'll gather lilacs' was one of his popular songs in the Second WW.

Ivor Novello was also in films and was known as the New Valentino. I remember my maternal grandma being very fond of him, and singing 'We'll gather lilacs' when I was a small child.
A striking-looking man who wrote some lovely songs. I love "We'll Gather Lilacs".
