This is a cross-section from a Septarian geode. These geodes were formed in the ancient sea floor.
Septarian geodes are formed from claystone and have yellow calcite filling the cracks in crystal form. Aragonite veining outlines the calcite, forming brown patterns.
These geodes are generally buried in clay 20-30 feet underground. They are 50-70 million years old, from the Cenozoic Era.
This is beautiful! I have a couple of geodes my son collected, but never thought to photograph them. That's what is so neat about this project--seeing through other people's eyes.
