Liquid Or Solid by digitalrn

Liquid Or Solid

Another example of opposites, water: liquid or solid. This week's theme was a good idea. They say opposites attract, and it is often the case in relationships, maybe not in all cases, but I think quite often we find that we can be attracted to others who are "wired" differently. In a relationship, these differences can be a good thing, because often these differences will complement each other, and they provide opportunities where we can encourage and support each other. In a relationship, one partner's weakness may likely be a strength in the other. As I was reading through some of the posted comments, I was forced to think in a much broader sense than what I had initially intended, so I thought it was important for me to come back and clarify my thinking a bit further. I believe most of us understand, and many of us probably know instances where differences ended up being a negative experience rather than a positive one. Sometimes the dfferences that seem to attract individuals to one another actually turn out to be unhealthy in more way than one. Some examples might spirituality, a believer and an unbeliever, one religion versus another, someone who consumes alcohol, and another who disagrees with the use of alcohol all together. These are probably examples when the differences would not make a good match, even though in both cases there may be personal qualities that are attractive to the other. I believe it is extremely important to look at the big picture when it comes to a relationship. To ignore some of these signifcant qualities that make up our own value system, values that should be present when they're not, I believe means a higher possibility that there will be some significant personal struggles in the future. And again, this is not always true, because I believe there are those individuals who can live their lives together and make it work in spite of some of these major differences. I think there is a higher possibility that the relationship will suffer hardships when some of these important values do not match up, and as Ann stated in her comment, it has the potential to cause a "meltdown" in the relationship as illustrated in the photo. Healthy differences can definitely be a positive thing, and they can be influential in strenghtening the bond that exists in a relationship as individuals complement one another. I think this week's theme made an interesting photographic study. Hope you all have a wonderful evening and a great Sunday.

Wonderful idea for opposites and so true what you wrote, you always have such great insight.

Great picture to illustrate the theme. I don't really think opposites attract so much as certain qualities complement each other and fill in gaps. The drunk and the tea-totaler don't make a good combination but the scatterbrained and the organized can find a middle ground that makes each richer.

Opposites attract is a tricky proposition sometimes because the positive benefits can become overbearing under the wrong circumstances and a meltdown-like your picture can occur! But in a healthy opposites really do complement each other (like Allison said) and those are the best relationships of all. Nice shot Rick- and good words to contemplate.

Another fabulous opposites shot, Rick! Love the black and white and how sparkly the ice is. I've been with my husband for 21 years and were are quite opposites in temperament. I'm kind of high energy and a bit high strung and he is calm and cool. It's a really nice balance because I bring excitement to his life and he levels me out. But I think it only works because we share very similar values about what is most important in life, like family, love and kindness. It seems to me it would be trickier if a couple had different values.
