I Still Like The Old by digitalrn

I Still Like The Old

I grew up loving to fish. My Grandfather and Father taught me the joy of fishing, and when I say fishing, I am talking about two fishing rods, my tackle box, a can of worms and a chair. I have always used the old style open face casting rod and reels. There's a knack to using them, and if you don't have enough thumb pressure on the spool when the hook and sinker hits the water, the line keeps unwinding, and you have a mess called backlash. Not everyone is able to successfully cast these reels, and sometimes the backlash can be pretty nasty, requiring a lot of patience unraveling the mess. I was able to master the art of open face casting at a fairly young age, and even in areas that are overgrown with trees, I can usually get my hook and sinker where I want it without getting hung up in the trees. Last year I had to retire my Father's old casting reel, and on my last fishing trip I noticed my Grandfather's old reel is beginning to wear out. I've looked at some of the newer bait casting reels, and contemplated buying one, but I have a problem giving up the old type reels. Yes, remember, I am sentimentaI. I do not need a fancy reel to enjoy a day of fishing. I prefer finding a spot along the lake, casting out my line, and then sitting in the chair, waiting for the fish to bite. That's how I grew up fishing. I've tried fly fishing, and that's an art in itself, and I am man enough to admit that I am not good at walking that line out across the water. My Dad loved to fly fish, and I loved the movie, A River Runs Through It, but it's not for me. I also tried plugging for bass, but I always come back to the old fashion habit of sitting by, waiting for the fish to bite. There is nothing sweeter than the sound of the old time clicker once the fish grabs your bait and decides to run with it. You grab the rod and anticipate the size of the fish by the pull on the other end. That's what it's all about. My Son has also mastered the use of the bait cast reel, and it is now his reel of choice. So now with both of my favorite reels out of commission, I was forced to think about my next set of reels, but then about a week ago, my Brother told me he had two nice old fashion reels that he had bought at a sale, and rather than having them sitting on a shelf, he asked me if I wanted to buy them. I checked them out, and wrote the check. He told me that he had spent an evening cleaning them up real well, and expected them to work just fine. When I held them and gave the reels a spin, they rolled as smooth as my other ones used to. I searched on-line for some of the old fashion braided fishing line, because you cannot find it anymore in stores around here, and once I found a supplier I ordered several spools, and tonight I will get them ready for my next fishing trip to the lake. Boring, perhaps to some who enjoy the excitement of fly fishing and plugging for bass, but this is what makes me happy, and that's what counts, LOL. Have a great evening.
ahhh memories :) I fished with my dad almost everyweek through high school...riverbank...no fish, but lots of great life lessons taught during quiet discussions.

A photo of a reel gets my attention every time - I am an avid saltwater fisherlady and to me, these are instruments vital to one of my passions! Very nice shot!
July 24th, 2011
Oh - and I use baitcasters exclusively, unless I am casting into stiff winds. I think these reels, especially the traditional round models, are beautiful!
July 24th, 2011
Great focus in your photo and your story Rick. You have a wonderful way with words and not boring at all. Some folks think I am boring because I like to look at birds and flowers. It is who we are. Enjoy your evening of fishing.

I'm not into fishing- would probably have a tough time sticking a hook through a worm, but I loved your story and I like the shot. I'm glad you found some replacements so quickly. Before I saw your conclusion I was already thinking you'd be able to find some by going to garage sales and out on ebay. I perfectly understand the relaxing and sitting. Being a contemplative sort, I'd probably go along with someone who fishes just to sit there and take in the beauty of God's world rather than the actual art/sport. Enjoy your "new" reels!

That's a pretty piece of machinery. Good luck with it. Our lake is very active with fishing...bluegill, bass, croppy, catfish, carp (yuck, did I say carp). Myself?, I think I would like fishing without a hook.

New is not always better... just look at me.... lol Im old and better than any other newer model that is coming up behind me...
This is a lovely photo,, and a great memory once again..

Sue
ahh fishing, that brings back memories. I used they same type also. I loved the feeling of the nibble vibration that told you a fish was taking interest, and the line sinking under the water as the fish took the bait and swam off..such great memories! Not so great was the time my brother hooked a worm to my leg while casting....shiver!

Great capture. I admit I fished for years in my youth but never got into this type of reel. Each to his own. But the bankside memories are still with me and I loved that time. Evocative shot for me. Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful shot! It's a shame your father and grandfather's reels are both worn, especially with all the wonderful memories that are attached to them. I'm glad you were able to find replacements so you can continue fishing the way you love to do it. With many innovations, I find it makes whatever you're doing easier but takes away some of the skill and artistry of doing it the old way.
July 25th, 2011
Wonderful pic! I'm not very good with this kind of reel, but I'm fairly good with a closed face reel. Worms is my choice of bait too. Your story brought back a lot of good memories for me. :0)

Some things just improve with age!

Such a simple and meaningful shot. Rick, a shot like this lets each person relive their own memories with this tool

Like this shot in black and white! love the memories.
July 25th, 2011
Love this shot!! Memories are wonderful!!!

I have many great memories of going fishing at the cottage. I haven't went fishing in a long time but I did see many fish jumping this weekend at my new lake. Great B&W!
July 25th, 2011
Great composition
July 25th, 2011
can't mess with a classic! Nice shot.
July 25th, 2011
Cool memorabilia shot! makes a great theme shot too!

@nikkers Nikkers, I couldn't agree more, and I am sure that you are a quality package, and perhaps like wine, you improve and become only more valuable as you grow older. You made me smile.
July 25th, 2011
@digitalrn . ahh you know how to make a girl blush... :D
July 25th, 2011
Love this shot...b&w works well here. I learned to fish with a guy friend but am still not good enough to confidently do it on my own...he had a couple reels similar to yours but I kept getting mine all tangled so he gave me a different one to use that was more "fool proof!" We never sat still though...we either walked up and down in the river or along the shore or we took his canoe out. I enjoyed it.
July 25th, 2011
wonderful photo, I love your words as always well said. .. ah the click and the "zzziiing" as the fish takes the bait.................
July 25th, 2011
Oh, I love this!! Love your story, too! I remember from the time I was a very little girl going fishing with my Daddy, believe it or not! He took the boys -- and I wanted to go, too! I grew up fishing in my uncle's ponds! Only my brothers had rod and reels -- I only had a pole with a line on it. But it worked! Fishing takes me to a lovely place -- and for me, as well, it's about sitting on the fish bank.......the quiet and solitude and commune with nature. Thanks for sharing -- and have fun fishing!!
July 25th, 2011
Wonderful thoughts and memories. It's nice to have these memories.
July 25th, 2011
Awesome photo and what great memories!
July 25th, 2011
beautiful words... and beautiful shot...very nostalgic, indeed....
July 25th, 2011
I have never been fishing but I loved your story as usual.
July 25th, 2011
I prefer the bait caster reels as well. Fishing should be relaxing. I tell everyone "when I get a boat, it will be too small tot ski, board, or whatever other kind of water sport they want to do. It will be a FISHING boat"
July 25th, 2011
I have the habit to dive with my immagination with every story i read and hear. This story gave me peace and transport me to a time when when everything was simpler but more natural and beautiful. Unfortunatelly i dont know anuthing about fishing. I tried one time and i hooked my friends pants before it could reach the water and he never let me try again hahahaha. Love the B&W and you made me appreciate the subject with your story.Enjoy your day :))
July 25th, 2011
Beautifully composed.
July 25th, 2011
Really gorgeous! Love the contrast
July 25th, 2011
Good shot!
I only have one rod & reel & haven't used it for a while.
This reel looks good. I love your story of your fishing experience.
July 25th, 2011
Modern manufacturing brings newer materials and methods, but there is something about the quality of older items that has been lost in modernization. You can see it here in the very visible engraving and high quality fittings. Good luck with the new reels.
July 25th, 2011
Well, I must admit, I've fished once when I was a kid. I felt so bad once I saw the fish gasping (that I caught) I threw it back in and cried all the way home. It sounds like you have some good memories with your experience, though!
July 25th, 2011
Beautiful, sentimental shot. I love your sentiments. They just don't make anything as solid and quality like they used to.
July 25th, 2011
Wonderful. Rick, I appreciate your willingness to share things with us, your history etc. It helps us feel that we know you so well. No wonder I think of you as a friend.
July 25th, 2011
@mary1440 Well thank you Mary. Likewise.
July 25th, 2011
I love the story behind this as well as the shot!!! Enjoy what makes you happy my friend!!! :o)
July 25th, 2011
What wonderful memories, Rick, and so beautifully written. When I was 10 years old, my family moved to a lake. One of the first things my dad did was get us fishing rods and reels. I remember them being open like that, and spending hours sitting on the banks or in the row boat waiting for a bit. We caught many, mostly Blue Gill, Sunfish, and Bass (in season, of course), but every once in a while a Pike, which was scary to us for some reason. Now that I think about it, my dad knew what he was doing in that it was an excellent way to teach us girls to be quiet. I have to agree with Mary, too. Letting people into your life, sharing as you do, is inspiring, and makes me feel as if I know you as a friend would know you. Thank you for your sharing.

Another great photo and great story to match, Rick. I called my hubby in here to look at it and read it too. He's into fishing and loves to just sit at the lake and contemplate. He said that type reel is hard to master . . as you explained it so well. He's a "fellow fisherman" and like you loves the older (and better) equipment. If I go fishing with him, he has to put the worms on my hook and listen to me say "ick!" Plus, I "talk" too much. I guess one can't do that when you're with a REAL fisherman. Loved your whole composition here. . .it's the "reel deal!"
July 25th, 2011
We used to go fishing a lot being right here by the lake. I should rephrase it I would hold the line after Hans put the worm on and when I caught something he had to take of the hook. needless to say we had lots of fun. it is such a great pastime.. don't know too much about reels. great picture Rick.
July 25th, 2011
What great memories. :) Love this in B&W. :)
July 25th, 2011
Some things just feel better... :D I'm guessing you have some fishing days planned now that you've got the reals and some line. :)
July 25th, 2011
I think many of the older things are better. Wonderful shot and words Rick.
July 25th, 2011
Wonderful shot, it makes you want to investigate further
July 26th, 2011
a fav, Rick. it's a wonderful shot and story. i, too, am pretty sentimental about things and really appreciate your thoughts. get ready for some fishin'!
July 26th, 2011
btw, i have been banned from ever touching any type of fishing rods after i nearly sunk a sinker in a woman's head at the outer banks many years ago. she was walking along the beach and obviously i missed the ocean ... lol
July 26th, 2011
FAV! Love the B&W but most of all, I love the sentiments expressed in your words.
July 26th, 2011
@pinktornado39 I have this funny picture in my mind right now Laura, and I see this lady chasing you along the ocean shoreline.
July 26th, 2011
@digitalrn - lol ... Help!!!!!
July 26th, 2011
Oh, I love this photo!
July 26th, 2011
What a great story to go with the photo! I have no idea how to cast one of those. I've got backlash written all over me!
July 27th, 2011
wonderful shot.
July 27th, 2011
Very good clarity of the photo, the contrast it's also very good
July 27th, 2011
As always I just loved your reminising about "the good old days of fishing" and you are so right about the way things were made way back ....... So wonderful that your brother had just got a couple and happy for you that you now own them. Happy reeling Rick for many years to come.
July 28th, 2011
I have to tell you- not only am i a big fan of your photographs but of your words as well... :) simply beautiful
July 28th, 2011
Great sharp shot of this reel. My dad had this reel and loved it when he would help me cast. Great memories and wonderful story.
July 29th, 2011
Well whatever works for you & if gives you great enjoyment, stick with it. Great B&W photo.
