I'm going to be using my Mom's camera in a few months to photograph a wedding. Neither of us know too much about the camera. So, I'm looking for advice when it comes to purchasing a memory card for it. It currently uses a Patriot 4GB Compact Flash memory card. I've looked up prices a few places on them, and I wanted to see if anyone has advice on what kind to purchase, or if the name brand really matters.
I've just bought a second SD card from Amazon, Sandisk Extreme pro 95mb 8GB card for just over £20. Incredibly fast download, I'm not sure if they have your card type but its worth looking, to buy it from a camera shop its £56, bargain!
No idea what Patriot cards are like but I would have thought you'd need at least another 4GB preferably an 8GB, it mostly would depend if you're shooting RAW or jpegs as RAW takes up way more space! I use a 16GB with an 8GB & 4GB as backups but I stick to Sandisk so can't help you with makes!
Good luck with the wedding, you're braver than me tackling one of those :)
@amoment - If you can get ahold of the manual for the camera, it will tell you which Compact Flash (CF) cards are best to get for the camera. If it's an older camera, it may not be able to take advantage of the faster transfer rates of the newer CF cards and so you might not need to buy a fast transfer rate card and that could save you some money. Faster MB/s = higher price (generally). Capacity will also add to the price, but the slower 4 and 8 GB cards are generally pretty reasonable in price.
Pretty much any name brand card will be good quality. I have SanDisk and a Hoodman card. Both brands work very well.
@amoment - it's a file format in camera that allows you more control of editing afterward. For example, if you choose the wrong white balance and your photo is too cool/hot, you can 'save' it a little better after the fact. Phenominal technology :)
@snippets -- I am just afraid the 4gb will not be enough. I am bringing a helper, so we'll be using two cameras, so not ALL of my images will be on one camera.
