We have had a mama and baby whale in our local harbor. Bill, a member of the camera club I belong took some fantastic shots and they are on Yahoo's front page! And an article here. I'm so proud of him, I had to share with all of you. It has been amazing to see them out there.
They kayakers and boats are not supposed to be that close to the whales. I was surprised the harbor patrol was not out there making them stay back.

@tigerdreamer I agree, I was out there yesterday photographing from the road and there was a bunch of kayakers. They were way too close and they are not supposed to be out there that close, it is considered harassment to the whales. One kayaker got capsized. The rest came to shore after that.
@catwhiskers Can't believe anyone would stand on a surfboard-thing so close to a whale's mouth. Did they not see Pinocchio or hear about Jonah?!

Truly amazing photos...what a lucky day for your friend to be in the right spot at the right time. My first tought about the paddlers and people in Kayaks was: Are they insane? @filsie65 : lol, they might not have ever read Pinocchio it seems ;)
@synke No kidding, I'm not that brave! I just saw that two other people I know went out today in a kayak to photograph from the water. I'm going to gave to ask them what is was like being that close
