When "Spraying and Praying" isnt so bad to do. and why Higher Class Card is a good investment

Spraying and praying is a phrase use to tell those photographers who just hold the shutter button without thinking or composing or whatnot and hoping for a winner shot to come up out of it.

But there are just situations that it's not so bad. For example this photo. I went down to watch this david blaine event today which basically involves thunders or whatever you call it. We cannot just beat speed of light and it's next to impossible to capture it the way we want it. It involves a little luck. So in this kind of situation we could use the "spray and pray" technique but... we should ofcourse THINK first. Compose the shot, set the exposure and then fire away.

Now when doing rapid firing or burst shots, is it wise to have a Higher class cards because it will serve you well. I don't want to be too technical in explaining it but I would explain it base on my experience earlier, I have a class 10 cards and I bursted away to shoot the lights, I had no problem. But I ran out of memory and used my old cards, which is a class 4. It also shot at burst but it was slower. I'll use the term "buffer" and you can google about it.

Well here's my experience. I hope I shared a good one. BUT take note! DONT SPRAY AND PRAY. THINK and COMPOSE especially on situations when you dont need to rapid burst.

Let me know your opinions :)

PS. I know others would say, why not just take a long exposure photo since the subject is stationary and it would give me better results. I KNOW I could do that, but I said to myself it is another challenge for me so I shoot it in a way I havent done yet

@josephpadiernos I agree with the issue of slow cards. I was in a situation where I had to fire fast and furious. I know I lost a lot in the delay and buffering to save images. Spray and pray was my mantra during a week long fireworks convention in town. I am new to long exposure anyway, and had never shot fireworks before.

I think a high speed burst mode makes perfect sense for that kind of subject. Speed will depened on memory card speed and I also find it's quicker in RAW-only than RAW+JPEG.

There are some strong diagonal lines in this - perhaps the composition would be stronger if those lines came out of the upper corners?

@pizzaboy yeah! I dont shoot RAW + JPEG on everyday basis. just on weddings and events. Yup the frame/stage was strong. I just want to show in the picture the bolt haha I have more photos that I will post as soon as I pick the best

@welcometocarolworld you could do it! For fireworks Long exposure mode works best. :) and try to research using black card or paper while doing fireworks photography :)
