PHOTO STEALERS

January 8th, 2013
This wall of shame is dedicated to photographers that feel that it's okay to steal others work and post it as their own. Oh I'm sorry, it's okay to let their "web designer" do it.

Sad.

They should be arrested for fraud. I feel sorry for the people that pay and expect to see their shots come out like the ones he advertised.

Wonder what they say when the client doesn't get pictures of that quality?

Not doing your own work has always been something that gets you into trouble. i saw an image on here that won a theme after I had seen that very inage as part of an article earlier that week. The names attached to both images were different.

tineye.com is a great reverse search to see if one of your images or if another image was stolen. It shows all the websites that the image is being used.

I know this is happening, what to do

@missvicki --- Would you want to know about it? You can report it to the one whose work is being stolen. You could share the info on this site and let them expose the culprit. What would you want to happen if it was your work being stolen?

I would want to know, and I would want credit if my picture was published for sure. Using a watermark and never publishing to internet the original is what I should do, to prevent people from taking my photos I put the picture on my facebook and instead of coming to me for the picture, friends have "save as my pictures and printed and enlargement and told me" , I was very disappointed. Thus my comment what to do.

@byrdlip how can you prevent them from saving to their computer using save as button.

Well, you can ask your friends to not download your pictures but there is no way to stop them. I have a friend who told me that Google gave them a download option and showed them available pictures. So, why would it be wrong because Google allowed it? Simple. As the internet has grown, the copy and download function has not been disabled. Some sites disable them but most allow sharing, downloading, and copying. There are just way to many sites all over the world who do not know how or want to control this. This site, for example, allows pictures to be copy/pasted elsewhere. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that it's a common problem. The more people demand protection of their data, the more likely sites will do something to accommodate the need. I would really love to see the copy/paste/download function here to only be allowed for the owner of the photos.

As far as facebook goes, you can report your photos as being stolen and they will step in to help. Accounts have been closed without warning due to copyright issues. It's really unfortunate we cannot trust others to do the right thing. So for now, you ask your friend not to do that without permission.

Wow that is just pathetic! Why do that?

I've got one for you. There was a kid who went to my college who was murdered a couple of years ago, Eve Carson. Apparently her picture was picked up by a consulting firm in India somehow and they used it on a billboard: http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/03/21/1947979/image-of-slain-unc-student-body.html

I had someone share one of my photos without my permission. I asked that person to not do that because I didn't give permission. This is possible income for me and shouldn't be stolen by anyone.. whether it be unknown person or friend. I had a friend who actually asked if they could use one of my photos for their desktop image. I said as long as it didn't go elsewhere and she promised and so far I haven't seen it come up anywhere. If I find my images stolen, there will be lawsuits involved. That's my blood, sweat, tears and ingenuity that went into the photo. I think people who steal others photos to use as their own should face criminal charges. That's what copyright means. Those people on that link should be arrested, not just exposed. It's against the law. Period.
