Interesting comments at the bottom which seem to have missed the point. These restaurants have not banned customers from taking photos of their food, but rather of taking photos of food with the flash on.
Personally, I don't think this is an unreasonable response, as the flash can be a little disturbing, especially in a low lit restaurant (sadly, this may be the only way to take a photograph of your food).
However, if people are taking photos of great plates of food and then uploading them, then it is free advertising for the restaurant! I think that the best response came from the chef who said that people are not allowed to take photos in the restaurant area, but he is more than willing to let people come into the kitchen and photograph food.
At least there will be better lighting in the kitchen :P
@cally I have to admit, it actually makes me interested in going to check out the restaurant if the chef will let me in the kitchen. The kitchen lighting definitely shouldn't require a flash, or I'd be afraid they couldn't see to safely prepare the food.
I wouldn't want to be blinded by flashes going off while I'm eating, especially if its someplace I've chosen for atmosphere.
The headline of the article is misleading too.... it makes it sound like they're trying to ban all photos of food, which puts people into the wrong mindset when they start reading the article.
You make a very valid point about it being free advertising, maybe they need to start having special events for people who want to photograph their food.
@jase_h LOL. I rarely use flash. I want to be untackful and tell those people to work on their skills so they can get the image without flash. There a many many places that flash is not allowed or good ethics should tell you not use flash. A restuarant is one of those places.
food photography sucks when using an iphone or point and shoot flash, it makes it shiny with a giant light beam in the middle. No wonder the chefs do not want people to think that is what their food looks like.
