I agree with Josh. Those cheap kits can be ok if you just want to test the waters, but you won't get even remotely close to the results you'd get from a cheap strobe set.
agree with jinx and josh. Hot lights are just that...hot, which is annoying to say the least to your sweating subjects.
The first set I picked up (and still use remotely) was a $250 RPS lighting strobe set. 3 x 160wps strobes with umbrellas and wireless. I can take it anywhere because it is light. Plasticy, but they work great.
AlienBees most definitely! Easy to work with, reliable, and they don't fry whatever you're photographing.
I did some modeling back in the day, and I grew to strongly dislike any photographer that used hot lights. They just suck to stand under! I'd end up sweaty and flushed. And the lighting never seemed to come out as nicely as those who used strobes (could be the noob vs. experienced thing more than the lights, tho).
