Google Search By Image Takes Typing Out of the Equation

June 15th, 2011
"By now, just about everyone is familiar with Google Image Search. Type in a phrase, hit the button and you're bombarded with images that may or may not be related to what you were looking for. But now Google has reversed the process with Images.Google.com, allowing users to submit an image and get a pile of pertinent web results.

The project was unveiled at Google's Inside Search event. The feature will be rolling out over the next few days. If you go there now and see a little camera icon in the search bar, it's already enabled for you.

In order to search, you can paste the images URL (if it's already on the web), upload it through the browser interface or just drag and drop the image from your desktop. There are also Chrome and Firefox extensions if you feel like you'll be using it a lot. Once the image is processed, you're bombarded with web results as well as related images.

I tried a couple of my own personal images and it pulled up many other images with a similar overall look in terms of color and brightness. Picking a more famous image will generate more robust results, though you'll likely get some stuff that's just wildly unrelated."

Is this new? I'm sure the "find similar images" thing has been on there a while...

Not sure but the article is dated today. @eyebrows

@dmortega yeah I noticed the article date too, but... hrm... well, no real way of telling *shrug*

Even though the article does it, I'll mention tineye.com too, as that *literally* does an image search, and is pretty damn useful.

Cool, at first I thought this was going to be like goggles - I think that was what it was called...
June 15th, 2011
ooh that's so cool! thanks for passing it on!

@dmortega BTW - very cool; thanks for alerting us to this. The result I got above was pretty entertaining.

@reba
Hmmm .... I don't think it saved the search because I just get the main google page. Glad it works
June 15th, 2011
@reba Link worked for me - awesome!
June 16th, 2011
@jinximages Cool. Glad it worked. When i click on it, it takes me right back to my photo and search results.
June 16th, 2011
Hmmm .... nope. I'm gonna play with it anyway. :-)

@reba @jinximages
It may not be available here yet because I don't see any camera icon anywhere. I plugged in the url for one of my pictures on a public fb page and I got an error sayiing it couldn't find the document.

@dmortega You have to go to images first - maybe you already tried that. But when I go to images, the search box has a little camera in it. When I'm at the main google pg. there is no little camera.
June 16th, 2011
@dmortega to see the camera icon go to your wrench icon...tools...and there is an option box that you can click to bring that up
June 16th, 2011
@reba @loztsoul --- Hmmm .... I bet my problem is I don't have a google account and not logged in.
