We've been on vacation for a week, so I have a lot of catching up to do. Saw this pop up while uploading a couple of photos. If I am reading things properly, this was originally a reference to a funny website posting.

But perhaps this can be turned into a more-serious discussion. I own a Canon Eos Digital Rebel; I've had it for about five years, and still really like it, although it is now middle-of-the-pack, at best, as far as sensor size and speed are concerned. I am still learning things about it, and have been able to gradually improve my use of it over time.

But I'll be honest: I miss my Olympus OM-1. That was a better camera than my Rebel, in a number of ways. I would put that up against almost any "popular" (under $1,000) digital camera, despite that it needs film and all that that implies.

That being said, if I had my old Olympus back, I would likely only use it when lightning conditions made things difficult for my Rebel to get a good shot. There is no argument that getting a good shot when there is a large range of lighting in the frame is tough with a digital, while a film camera rarely has any trouble.

As for Nikon, I've used Webfoot's a few times, when we have been caching together, usually when he has asked me to take a shot with him in the frame. It's nice, no argument, although some of the buttons are in the "wrong" place ;-) Looking at some of the work he has done, it is obvious that his camera has some advantages over mine, beyond the fact that he is just plain more creative than I am. In some situations, I can hold my own, and maybe even do a little better than he does, but most of the time, he outshines me. I'm not envious... really, I'm not; I'm just realistic.

I don't know if Nikon is "better" than Canon, and I don't have enough experience with Nikon to tell. Nikon makes nothing but photographic equipment, while Canon makes printers, radiology equipment and other stuff, so Nikon might be able to "focus" (pun intended) on cameras, but I wonder if they are certain of which market they want to reach. Looking at each website, Nikon's offerings seem to be spread out across a larger price-and-feature range.

In any event, it's all moot on a personal level. I'm not in the market for another camera, and I likely won't be for some years, unless a really great deal comes my way. But I'd be interested in the comments of others, if there are any.

I'm a Nikon user that has never used a Canon, so I can say nothing against Canon. Although, I can say negative things about Nikon. Don't get me wrong, i love Nikon, I just wish they would slow down. It seems they have a new release about every month now. Just when you think you bought the newest camera, you see a commercial with Ashton talking about his newer camera. I want that one too.
