Memories of Skin & Blood

August 6th, 2011
Fascinating article about a photographer who suffered fourth-degree burns on her body and has now done a series of nude photographs documenting her recovery. Amazing what the human body is able to withstand.

Just to warn you, the pictures are graphic depictions of scarred skin and there is nudity.

Definitely inspiring. Makes my 'reasons' for not wanting to do a self-nude inconsequential in comparison to what this woman has gone through...

I'm so glad some of you clicked through and were as moved as I was. Do check out her website for more from her series.

I think what most strikes me about her photos is that she still looks beautiful. Whether it's the poses, the lighting, or her confidence that does it I come away thinking about how our standard definition of beauty doesn't apply but somehow she makes it work. There's something sensual and attractive about even her most graphic shots. How we define beauty and who decides that definition are things I've long since pondered, especially looking the way I do. I definitely don't fit the conventional definition of beautiful but I've got to believe that there's more to beauty than a Barbie-like figure, a perfect nose, and long, flowing blonde hair.
