Blue eyes, smiling at me.....

make that turquoise eyes but here is my first attempt at a black and white photo with just a little bit of color

Not the right application in my mind. If the color was a little softer, sure, but this doesn't make her look human. Did you change the color's intensity at all, or is this really how her eyes look?

i couldnt get the blue to stay her eye color. Again I did it photoshop elements and what I wanted to do was change everything but her eyes to black and white, leaving her eyes their natural color. I have a manual for my elements program but sometimes it is hard to understand. I will keep playing around with it. What application would you have done?

Ok, I'm thinking you are having some issues with misuse of elements. What are you doing to try to isolate a color? This example along with the M&M's one makes me believe that you aren't selecting everything but what you want to keep in color, make it B&W and then add color. What I would do it select her eyes via the magnetic lasso tool and go to select-->inverse. At this point, hit CTRL+U. Pull the saturation slider all the way to the left. This will make everything B&W except for what you initially selected. This will keep your initial selection the original color that it was when photographed.

I think this would work better if there was less saturation in the eyes. as it is it feels too unnatural..... Try taking the saturation back to see if it looks more natural. I would also try increasing the contrast on the rest of her, just a tiny bit not too much.

Other than that this is a beutiful portrait. in the end it just might look better if it were all b/w.. imo

followed what you said kristen and it looks a whole lot better except for the fact that her eyes were very gray that day so I might as well just leave it all black and white. guess the idea wasnt very successful for this photo. Maybe someday my next one will be a whole lot better. I will keep all your guys' advice in mind the next time.

Honestly, I really really like the eyes. It may look a bit creepy that they are so blue. but I think that makes it really awesome!

IDK if you have layers in PS Elements but if you do, put the blue eyes on a different layer on top of the black and white eyes and set the opacity to 50% that way the blue sinks back into the photo and makes it look like its real.

I don't mind the dramatic affect, it has its place.

you can now view the results of how it turned out when I followed kristen's advice on my upload section. i just posted it for tomorrow's photo. A little bit discouraging as it isn't like i had envisioned, but if at first you don't succeed.....

Rachel, I also have tried this technique before on my own blue eyes & have found they turn grey when I take the shots indoors. But following Kristen's process on a photo I take of my eyes outdoors tends to work nicely:

The color is SOOO beautiful!!! ...If you were going for an unrealistic effect, then this is good. But I would recommend making it look slightly more natural...that way it makes the view wonder whether you did much to eye color or if her eyes are just THAT stunning :) actually it all has to do with opinion. Some people are going to REALLY love this photo...and others not. Thats the way it is for all photography. personal taste...thats all :) Cute kid though!
