Probably answered somewhere........

Hey guyz! I'm new here, new to photography and new to DSR's and loving it! Have LOTS to learn and plan to take a class that starts next month, in addition to learning from the rest of you!!

I searched for this question, and saw a lot that was similar, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I have a Canon Rebel Tsi ..... what is your favorite "keep it mounted most of the time" lens that doesn't cost more than the camera did? :)

Thank you............ and I'm so excited to be here!!

Most of the time I have my 18-200 Tamron.
My 50mm is also great and cheap. Look into the 50mm. It takes great shots!

I'm gonna bet a lot of people say their 50mm f/1.8. I personally like my 35mm f/1.8 best for running around. :)

I have the 50 mm f/1.8............ LOVE IT! But there are times when I'd like to have another "LOVE IT"!!!! :) But I sure couldn't beat the price on the f/1.8!

Thank you! Keep 'em coming!

I'm afraid I'm going to be predictable and say the 50mm f1.8. It's the one that's on my camera nearly all of the time!

50mm is a good solid go-to lens. My go-to is actually 17-55, but that's my preferred style. That said, everything take for 365 so far is with my 100mm.

@mematoriley I usually have a zoom on mine, but which one depends on where I'm going.

If I'm indoors it's the horrid kit lens that came with it (18-85). For outdoor use and distance portraiture I'll use my zoom (70-300) which was pretty cheap, but not the lens I should have bought (70-200 f2.8).

I hired the monster 28-300 for abbeyfest for the widest range with the least amount of lens changes. When it's dusty and windy and smoky you don't really want to be switching around your lenses!

Tagged picsabbeyfest.
I'm debating hiring it out again next year, the thing weighed a TON! None of the other photographers there had actually seen one 'in the wild'.

Depending on how serious you want to be with your photography should determine how much you spend. If you want to be serious you need to pay for the glass. I know I should have when I bought the zoom but I couldn't justify it at the time (even though we had the money). I'm looking back and kicking myself for not buying the L series.
If you ever have plans to upgrade to a full frame make plans to buy the lenses that can go with it now rather than buying APS-C dedicated lenses now then having to rebuy the same zoom range later.

As for the 50mm, get one! you'll love it. I use it when doing shots of my niece, cat, and anything else I can get to sit still for long enough and not scowl at the camera (not my husband).

i love my 35mm f/1.8....once i got it, i rarely ever take it off...however, i just got an 40mm f/2.8 for christmas which i'm thoroughly enjoying as well.....

I've been keeping the f/1.8 on my camera most of the time because I love it. It's GREAT for things that will stay still for just a few minutes....... lol. Not always the best lens for my 20 month old grand daughter .......... still working on the cats and trying to find things that don't move at all :) I'm sure it'll be easier and faster once it's not so cold outside so I can get out there and hopefully get some great shots of new Spring budding flowers, baby birds, spring showers, spring spring spring.......... c'mon spring!

The 50 1.8 is pretty limiting since it is zoomed in so much all of the time. I just ordered the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and am loving it. I don't think I'll be removing it anytime soon. Fast lens, extended zoom range from the kit lens, and sharp.

@Joshua @mallocarray , Thank you! This would be a good partner with the f/1.8? (And of course, the 2 kit lenses it came with.)... but really wanting one that would remain on my camera most of the time, and my f/1.8 kept at my side :)

i'd have to agree whole-heartedly with @sdpace @dkg and @mematoriley . my 35mm f1.8 has been on my camera for many many months and only comes off when i need flexibility in the width of view (e.g., wider for landscapes, variable for children or action shots, etc.). i like people shots best and living in canada, the available light is limited this time of year - two things the 35mm f1.8 deals with very well.

@mallocarray i would love to have a variable focal length with a fixed aperture. sounds super nice.

@mematoriley Unless you do a lot of wide angle shooting, like landscape, you might find that the Tamron is great. With my kit lens I almost never shot at 18mm, and I feel right at home with indoor shots with the 28-75 and that little extra bit closer really helps. Not to mention that it takes fantastic shots at 3.5 - 4.0 giving you great shallow DoF. The 50 1.8 can still go a bit wider, so keep it around for a while, but I'll see how much I use it. Also, it weighs considerably more than my other lenses, but that is a good thing, feels more professional. ;)

It is the most expensive lens I've bought, but in just 1 week I'm loving it more than my other lenses.

@mallocarray I have no idea what I do yet.... ha! But don't see a need for wide angle landscaping shooting unless I win some exotic trip somewhere and in that case, I should be able to afford a lens to accommodate me :) Like @sdpace, the idea of a variable focal length with a fixed aperture sounds perfect for what I'm looking for. Thank you so much! THANKS TO EVERYBODY!!

well. for now on my canon 40d - that would be helios 44m-4. :D
had some others on my mind. but not enough money to go. :(
but for static stuff - helios is perfect. and definitely cheaper than your dslr. :P
(soon going for e-pl1 with 45/1.8. can't wait!)
