I got tired of the camera choosing to focus on the wrong thing. If you do too, then try the following:
In Custom menu a1 - set AF-area mode to Single Point
With the single point in the center, there is a little lever in the back of the camera - move this to "L" (lock). This locks the focus point in the centre.
Then use "focus and recompose", which means you centre the viewfinder on your subject, wherever you want to focus, press the shutter halfway to focus, then holding the shutter halfway down (to lock the focus there), recompose the shot and then press the shutter release the rest of the way down.
If your focus dot was stuck on the right, it may be that your Lock is on, so you'd move that lever back off of "L".
