1. wait for a snow storm. (this could take awhile due to several limitations. climate. location. precipitation. temperature.)
2. capture the snow. you can do it during or after. but you get the idea.
3. don't wait until it melts.
4. make snow angels somewhere inbetween all the madness!
5. snowball fight! (make sure your camera is in a safe and dry place during this)
6. go inside and make ye some hot chocolate.

good luck and post pics!

I'm waiting for a small storm, the 3-5 inches kind so I can go do a winter shoot of the Korean War memorial in downtown DC. It consists of a group of statues of soldiers humping their gear through a field. Also on my list would have been the wreaths at Arlington, but they come off the graves next weekend, so if the snow doesn't hurry that one is scratched for this year. Also on my snow shoot list: headstones, children sledding, snowmen and dogs running.

we got six inches of snow last night.. and it's going to start getting warm starting tomorrow, so i want to get it done today before it starts melting!

@swguevin - I thought we were going to get lucky last night with at least a coating to an inch of snow (I'm in WV, on Potomac River, across from MD) so I totally understand where you are coming from. Missing the snow big time this year!

I always like to take snow photos of details and nooks and crannies. Think about tree branches, a row of mail boxes with snow on top, wrought iron railings. Find a place with Christmas Lights and how it interplays with the snow. I just find it more interesting at how it interplays with every day life instead of a big landscape.

I always try to pick a little something that add some color to the picture... Also I learn to be careful bc the white of the snow can overexpose the picture a lot.

And this one was my first picture f snow ever... I use to leave in places where it never snows

Trees always make for a nice contrast:

This is my picture for today. More of a "during a snow" than an "after".

I always run out right after before the snow melts from the trees

or find something that ordinarily wouldn't be in a "snow" scene

Techically, an after-snow capture:

The key is getting out there, enjoying the snow, and seeing what you see.

This was my celebratory shot for the fact that we finally got real snow, and I got to try out my new snowshoes. (Too much blue, I know.)

I also like all the lines and shadows and contrast with a white snow.
