Hi Everyone
I just wanted to say thank you so much to everyone thats commented on my photo, it really makes my day and i appriecate it so much more then you all realise and i think i've had a smile on my face everyday since i join 365. i'm sorry i'm so time poor and stuggle to leave comments back but i am trying, i love this little community so much it's like my second family,
Ok here's my question i know i'm not in anyway in the league of the photographers on here thank you for teaching me so much, i currently have a canon point and shoot camera and i have been really considering upgraged to a dslr a canon EOS 500D as there is a really good deal on it at the moment that i can afford,
What i was wondering is do you think i should stick with my p&s until i master it or upgrade now? i really hope this makes since hehehe any advice would be so appriecated
noooo dont do it Pam!
I nearly bought one and didnt realise how much of a difference there is between the 500D and 450D which is the next model up basically. I used a family members 500D and I found they made a huge leap between one to the next. The quality, the feel.. the applications...
You can get great deals on the 450D..Novaks camera house in hunter st were the best price and most helpful in newy.
Put the money for the 500D in the bottom of your draw until you scrape up the extra $300-400. Make do with your P&S till you can afford it.
Only just checked your photos and, seems like you're doing pretty good with the PoS already! :)
I would say go for it and jump to the SLR, but be aware that even though there might be a good deal on the camera itself (I'm presuming with a stock 18-55 type lens) if you want the versatility of that zoom on your PoS, and to be able to take landscapes, and macro shots, you're going to need to build up a collection of lenses too. Which gets expensive, trust me. If you don't mind that, then go for it!
Oh, that said, the 500D I *think* does HD video too, which might well give you more possibilities to play with and justify the expense anyway. Certainly would for me.
The deal going at the moment with the 450D's Pam is an 18-55mm and 55-250mm. They are a good combination to get started although there are a couple of others I have on my wish list.
Canon's model range is ordered in two stages, firstly descending based on the number of digits, then ascending based on the actual number.
As in, bottom of the pile is the 4-digit 1000D.
In the "entry level" 3-digit group you then have, from worst to best, 450D, 500D & 550D.
In the 2-digit next level up there's the 50D, which replaced the old 40D.
Once you're into single digits there's the 5D, 7D & 1D, plus various iterations of each and I'm not sure how the rankings work here, but these also cost several thousand so it's a moot point.

yep at good guys i was in camera house talking to the guys in there about it then when i walk outside a lady that was in the shop the same time as me came up to me and told me she got the exact same camera and the two lense at good guys for $750 so i checked it out and she was right exact same camera exact same two lense for almost half the price, camera house were great for advice but because goodguys have there sales on they work out so much cheaper at the moment
Hi Pam, I'm making the same decision at the moment so have found this discussion very interesting. I'm going overseas in August so can deduct 10% GST off the price. I can claim at the Airport. Just have to purchase 30 days or less before departure so I'm hoping these prices hold for another week. Let us know what you decide.
My camera is the canon 400D and its great lol it would be even better if i get to reading the book and learning all the other cool stuff i can do with it, ive had it for a while about 2 or 3 years when i bought it i got it for around $1300 or so i think and with the 2 lenses. You should check out JB-HIFI thats where i got my camera or even go see brendon and see how much they are at dick smiths, if i remember ill ask him to have a look if they have them and get the price and ill let ya know.
i wouldnt mind upgrading eventually
I had a canon point and shoot and I bought a canon rebel xs a month ago (an entry level SLR, I know, but that's all I could afford). And I so happy I bought it! I love to have complete control on the camera (or, I should say, to know, that when i'll learn how to, I can have complete control lol). I had the same question as you before I bought it, but I though..... there's automatic and "semi-automatic" modes (portrait, landscape, etc) on the SLR as well, so I can learn at my pace.
Do it!!! I still use my P&S too though so I wouldn't get rid of your P&S even if you do decide to buy it. I love having both. I love my P&S because I can stick it in my purse and take it anywhere.
I had no clue how to use my Canon 400D in manual mode when I got it. I decided that if I didn't learn how to use it, I just paid a ton of money for a larger P&S. To me, there is no point in spending that much money if you are not going to learn how to use your manual settings. It is all a matter of practice, practice, practice! I also take photography classes and that taught me a LOT about how to use my camera as well as how to compose better pictures.
If you can get that camera for that price (only just translated it into English) then get to it and buy every single one they have in stock. That is insanely, literally insanely cheap.
probably if you upgrade to dslr, then you can start your own photography for hire business because i love your shots thinking its only P&S. what more if you are on dslr!
Kellie... why you stop with the 550D of course! heh heh. Well the way I figure it is the price difference between 500-550 is minimal. The price difference between the 500 to a 5D Mark II is substantial :)
If you go for a DSLR then think of it as value for money. Not only will you get to play with all sorts of new things, you'll spend hours learning how to play!! They are great things to have, esp if you can start saving towards a couple good lenses.
You are great at photography, and if you enjoy it too, then its a win-win!! :-)
I just wanted to thank everyone for there help and advice. I ended up buying a canon 550d but as it was dearer i'm paying it off so will be a little bit before i get it, thank you all again you all really help me decide and not be so confused hehehe
cheers Pam
