Online posting FB, Flickr or other?

July 14th, 2010
This may have been a topic before but... If I were to have a bunch of photos I needed to upload, what would be the best site to do this on? I currently use Face Book and I do have a Flickr account that I do not use much.

Flickr.
Facebook owns your photos if you upload them. I stopped posting any photos to facebook once I found that out.

I upload things to facebook because that's where my friends and family are. However, I don't like it. Sometimes it doesn't work well and I have to start all over. I'm not sure that I would suggest FB.

I would say flickr. As Chris said above, Facebook owns your photos once you upload them... but even disregarding that, facebook severely reduces the quality of the pictures once they're uploaded. I've actually deleted a few pictures from facebook simply because they looked so horrible.

I use Picnik and have been happy with it. After I do any editing I save them in Photobucket. Then I email them to my 365 project.

Agree with Chris and Kelly about FB.

"For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos ("IP content"), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook ("IP License"). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it."

A friend of mine has seen his work used on the sidebar ad to advertise some online game. He knew it was his because he was in the photo!

Oh my goodnesssss. I never knew that about Facebook!
Maybe I should stop posting to there :/

The huuuge problem I've discovered with Flickr is the 100MB monthly upload limit. I end up using it all after about 2 and a half weeks. Maybe I should pay for it.. :/

Wow I never knew that about facebook... that is mildly frightening!!

I upload some of my stuff to my Facebook account because some of my friends requested to see it and they aren't so internet savvy but know how to use Facebook.

For the most part I use Picasa web albums, I was using Flickr for a while, but I wasn't happy with it at all, specifically with their limits on bandwidth and number of photos. I am almost full on my Picasa account, but when I decide to upgrade, it is only $5 a year for 20 GB. I don't remember what the prices were on Flickr, but I know it was more than that. I also like the organization options on Picasa more.

Flickr's good for mass uploads and storage but you need to pay for pro to get unlimited usage.

ow, I never knew that about facebook...that's why I decided not to use DeviantArt! So can Facebook like, sell your stuff and not tell you?
July 14th, 2010
I guess so Naomi. I've stopped uploading photos direct to facebook, but I guess the ones that get shown there through the 365 app don't count because they're just linked to here. Can anyone clarify that one?
July 14th, 2010
@Rachael Facebook doesn't own anything you link so our 365 Photos that are linked to FB are still your photos and owned by only you. So don't fret about those!

That's what I thought, but I just wanted to clarify. Thanks Chris. :-)

Thank you chris for pointing that out about facebook. I never knew that.

Damn Facebook!
July 15th, 2010
Naomi, DeviantArt owns the images too? Like Facebook does? :O

Thank you for all the advice. I was thinking about uploading to Flickr and putting a link on Facebook. I know people use other programs also. Is there an alternative to Flickr or Facebook?

I use smugmug. You pay $40 a year, but your friends don't have to sign up for an account or anything. It's very user friendly for uploading as well as viewing. If you want to see what it looks like www.twotigersmom.smugmug.com. If you use my email address when you join, I believe you and I both get $5 off. twotigersmom@aol.com

smugmug - if you don't mind paying a few dollars. for all of the account types there is unlimited uploading and storage, but with added moneys you can sell your stuff for prices you set yourself.
the pro accounts a bit much though, somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred and fifty dollars a year, but also i should say that everyone i know who has an account with them says that they easily make that much in sales, so the price isn't really an issue.

Flickr is fast.. but you need to have a pro account to get an unlimited number of photos on the site :)

Flickr is good, but i don't really like it somehow... the limit annoys me, and I don't want to pay to get more space. Like everyone have said about FB, I don't upload my photos there... except family and friends stuff that others want to see there. I use Photobucket too then post them on my blog, and very rarely I use deviantART. I use them mostly for my drawings. I haven't tried Picnik though!
July 15th, 2010
Oh, wow!! I never knew that about Facebook!! I kind of quit uploading photos there for a while, and now I am going to stop completely! Thanks for the info, guys!

I believe that FB cannot use your photos (as in taking them off your Page for their ads or anything else) if you set your Privacy Settings correctly. They do state "subject to your privacy and application settings," am I correct? My FB is set only to be viewed by Friends Only. Once my account gets deleted, all my photos go away unless one of my friends has tagged one of my photos.
