Help please?! File ordering, Nikon D5000.

Okay, I am actually going to be so so so grateful if someone knows how to fix this...

I've just bought a new camera (Nikon D5000) I love it, but I'm having a bit of an issue.

Basically, you know how most cameras order pictures chronologically no matter if you delete them or not? Well, basically, every time I plug my camera into the computer (to upload pictures) and then take it out...the numbering restarts from DSC_0001...this is making my life really rather difficult because it means that every time I want to transfer files onto my computer, I have to rename my files as you can't have to files with the same name.

I've tried changing the settings to "file numbering sequence - on"...but all that that did was create a new file on my camera...so that I now have 100D5000 with pictures starting from DSC_0001 and 101D5000 with pictures starting from DSC_0001...

Does anyone have any idea or know how I can sort this out and make my camera stop double-naming my pictures, please?!

Thank you so much.

My D5000 came with software to help upload pics (I think it's called nikon transfer). I only use it for uploading pics but it individually numbers the pics and you can choose whether you want the software to create a new folder for each individual download or not. If you're not using the nikon software, try it and see if t helps

Go into your custom settings menu, go to D4 (File Number Sequence) and set it to on. That should do it.

@Dave, thanks, I'll see what that does when I upload tomorrow!
@Josh, I tired that and it just set up a new file and began counting from one again...

Thank you!

Are you sure you are hitting ok to set the change? Nikon is funny about how you exit a menu. If you don't apply the change and leave, it is as if you never made a change at all. Those directions are correct so either something is wrong with your camera or the way you are doing it.

That's odd, since that's the setting that controls the file numbering on my D200 and D3. Go back into the setting, then press the '?' button (should be the same as your zoom out button) then read the description of that setting.

Hi Naomi, I use a card reader instead, its so much quicker than plugging the camera into the computer. I rather just remove the card and plug it into the card reader then into the pc!
