I've noticed a popular style is to have a black and white or sepia toned photo with one object within the photo in color. I love it....the color pops so nicely and I am very drawn to this style. This leads to my question :: How do you do it?! Is there a particular program I should be tracking down? I do my editing on a macbook pro....I use iphoto for now, but #1 on my Christmas list is adobe photoshop elements (and a tripod!!) Could anyone guide me through how to create this wonderful effect. Thanks all, and have a super day :)
A lot of us here use Picnik (picnik.com) - it's free (for the most part) and you can either choose the effect which retains the color and makes the rest b&w or the easiest way would be to use the sepia or black and white effects and then go over a part of the picture with the paintbrush :)
I do not have Photoshop either, and I think it's an easy Photoshop effect. I use Photosuite which has a lot of cool apps, but no selective coloring, at least not easily! Hopefully someone can give you some guidance and I'll be watching for that too . . . btw, I need a tripod too!
Those are great! Can't wait to get PSE9....I used it in high school a lot, so I am familiar with it, just a little expensive for a waitress/full-time student. If it's not under the Christmas tree, I'll have to treat myself :)
I don't use photoshop- I use paint shop pro, but they are similar and I can't image the steps are that different.
I. open photo
2. duplicate layer
3.promote layer to raster layer
4. change photo to b&w
5. use selection tool to outline area you want in color and the hit delete (your selection should now be in color)
6. merge layers
as I said I don't use photoshop, but I can't imagine the steps are that much different. This is a pretty simple effect to achieve and looks great for certain photos! Hope Santa brings you what you want under the tree. If you really don't want to wait until then and you are on a starving artist budget you can pick up Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 on Amazon for cheap!
Photoshop is great of course for precise control and achieving a variety of other effects but many uploading editing sites do it for free. I personally like to do that sort of thing in photoshop.
You can use Gimp to edit your photo's. It's free and is just as good as Photoshop. There's many tutorials online and on Gimp's website so it's really easy! You should give it a try. :)
