Hi all,
I know, we're not even in November yet, but I would really like to make a photo postcard again this year for christmas to send to friends and family. With all the things I've been learning this year, I would really like to setup a very nice photo to be used as a card, not just any old snapshot.
But I'm having a hard time getting inspiration on what kind of a christmas photo I want to take.
I'm guessing many of you will be contemplating doing something very similar, and I would really love to hear your idea, or see anything you let yourself get inspired on. I hope that will get my inspiration flowing as well.
I don't send out cards, but if I did, being single again with no kids, I would take a nice shot of my dog and I ! I think that's about as personal as I could get !! Plus I doubt if it would get tossed out after Christmas....people tend to save Christmas cards and business cards if your face is on them !!!
If you want some inspiration, look on sites like Snapfish or shuttefly - that's where I'm doing my Christmas cards from this year. They'll print and deliver for you too, if you want.
I always use a photo of my son, and this year his dog will get thrown into the mix . . . but I agree with Rachael, Shutterfly really does have some good ideas . . . do you decorate? Close up of an ornament, stockings over a fireplace with a fire in it, front door with a wreath or . . . if your family is like mine, dirty dishes and empty wine bottles!
If you want to be whimsical, you can take a photo anywhere in your own house and add in a pretty realistic Santa at www.capturethemagic.com . . . they have several to choose from and they turn out pretty well You pay for the download so then you can do whatever you want with it, don't have to buy prints from the website. We do that every year and leave the photos by the cookie plate for our son to find in the morning!!!!!
A couple of ideas .... I really like your mosaic picture and think it would be fun to make something like that for a Christmas card. Also you can center a picture that you like and create a border of smaller pictures of highlights or goofy moments during the year.
I'm already beginning to see ideas take shape in my mind's eye :-) Please keep the inspiration coming. Who knows who else besides me gets inspired as well.
Christmas and holidays are the two times in the year I really like to send out a real postcard, even though they seem as archaic as telegrams to me. But perhaps that's the whole charm of them.
One thing that jumped to mind reading @lynnmwatson 's response was to go on a photo with the kids in my rowing team and the other comments made me think of asking them all to put on a red santa hat :-) and perhaps sport some more christmas ornaments and a decorated rowingboat.
Whatever you come up with, be sure to share it with us! I'd love to see the kids on the rowing team out on the water all wearing santa hats and rowing in unison!!!!!
@lynnmwatson Lynn, I checked out that website and saved it to my favorites so I can use it for myself! I love the santas (or bunnies, tooth fairies, etc) and had never seen this before. Where have I been? Thanks for the info :0)
I am feeling inspired also. Thanks, Raymond, for the post.
@raymond during my single years, the rules for photo Christmas cards were, I had to take the picture, it had to be for the prior year and from the state that I was living in at the time. Other than that, anything goes, lots of scenic card were sent.
I don't send Christmas cards - I send New Year cards. Everyone I know celebrates the New Year and many people I know do not Christmas. I always make my own cards. With 2011 being the Year of the Rabbit -- you guessed it---Sytse will be the model for my 2011 theme cards. Yes, I know the Year of the Rabbit is a Chinese thing and it certainly doesn't begin on Jan. 1, 2011, but it will be fun.
you've got kids?? i saw a cute one last year from a friend of mine.. the whole family was dressed in their pjs around a fake chimney (just the part that sticks out of the roof). they sat the baby on top of the chimney. they were surrounded by wrapped presents.... somewhere on it were the words "twas the night before Christmas..." i thought it was an adorable idea!!
Thanks for all your comments, I have finally gotten inspiration for a fun christmas card, and I'm now really busy preparing for it. I have a group of 10 kids and junior coaches that I'm rowing with on sunday. I will ask them all to join in a teamphoto and I have bought christmas hats for all and a big heart shaped cushion with "We Love Xmas" embroidered on it. Also, I will have them all gather something they consider to really represent rowing for them and take that along in the photo. One of the sliding benches, an oar, just to bring rowing back into the photo.
I was hoping to take the photo yesterday, but I was missing part of the team, and I don't want anyone to be left out ofcourse. So far, all of whom I have told about the idea are very enthusiastic about it. :-)
I'm hoping to make the photo this sunday, so far, everyone is expected to be at training next sunday. Difficult to plan with a group as large as mine. When the magic happens, I'll make sure to post it!

I've not made xmas cards since my primary school days when it was all glitter, stickers and stencils, so I'm afraid I'm of no help :)
