Question about lost photos

November 29th, 2010
I was hoping to get a book together of my 2010 365 photos. As I was browsing my hard drive for pictures, I realized that my pictures from January to March are missing. I checked my back up hard drive as well and can't find the photos anywhere. As an ace member, I have access to my pictures in their original size, but it appears that the different sizes are only useful for embedding the photos on a website. My question is this: Can I somehow take the photos off of this website and put them back on my hard drive? When I try to copy and paste, the original resolution is lost.

Had a look into this just now. I've written a few tools that read data from the 365project.org website before, so I thought I'd be able to create one to do this too.

However... on a technical note, the filenames of the "original" size images are different to those of the other sizes. So the thumbnail is called "blahblah_t.jpg" and the main one is "blahblah_m.jpg" but the original is "somethingelse_o.jpg".

What this means is, as the only people who can view "original" sizes are the owning ace members, if I were to write a tool to download these images for you (or anyone else) I'd have to know your username and password so my tool could login as you, so it could see the filenames. With me so far?

It wouldn't be hard to write, and technically speaking I personally wouldn't know your password, but my database would, and there'd be no way for me to readily obfuscate that from myself. So it's down to if you trust a random guy on the net with your 365project password - if you do, I'll build this for you. And you can always change your password once it's complete.

Oh, one thing - how big, in terms of diskspace, are your original photos, roughly? Or if you're not sure, what pixel dimensions?

@trsers hi Tara, I will build this as an Ace member tool for you. It's on my list now. I've been planning on doing this for a while and as you need it i can speed it up a bit!

@eyebrows thanks for your efforts steve, I can do this for Tara.

Ross, Thanks so much for the speedy reply and all the work you put into the site. I am so happy that my photos aren't gone forever.

Hey Tara, how would you make a book of the photos? Would you do it yourself or use an outside service. I have thought of this as well. Let me know what you decide to do, I may be interested as well, depending on price.
