Canon DSLR Owners

January 3rd, 2011
Hi everyone, my first post here. 365 seems a very friendly bunch so thought I'd ask here first.

For anyone that has a Canon DSLR body, you know the wheel right next to the shutter release, not the one on the back, not sure if there are different names for them....anyway...Mine has started 'slipping' :S

That's the best way I can describe it. sometimes it makes the connection and changes the aperture or whatever it is I'm using it for, and other times it just slides.

Has anyone ever experienced this before? know of any fixes?

it's a 30D

@neda One of my 50D bodies does this sometimes. Sometimes turning it off and on again will fix it, but usually I have to remove the batteries for a minute or so. But, I think the problem is with the electronics, as I have the battery grip installed on it and the wheel on that also stops working at the same time. Doesn't happen too often though, so I haven't bothered to send it away (I always have a second 50D handy anyway). I haven't had the problem with any of my other cameras, or with either of my 30D bodies when I had those before the 50's.

@Neda Is the actual wheel slipping? Like it doesn't click every time? Or just the options aren't changing when ever you move the wheel?

Side note: I like the new profile pic. Just saw it change after signing in. haha.

@jinximages Hi Q for you please. I have a Canon 50D.
1) should I leave it on AF or MF?
2) which button is for the f stop. I have lost my manuel and am very frustrated with getting all buttons mixed up. Thank you in advance.

Hey guys thanks for the responses!
@craziemutant I do think it's physical rather than the electronics like @jinximages mentioned. at least I hope it is, since I'd think (probably incorrectly!) that it would be a cheaper fix. It's like the little rubber grippy part (sorry about my descriptiveness) of the wheel is slipping off the part that actually moves further down. I want to pry at it but I really cant make myself do it incase I damage it further. This is the same camera I'm missing the battery charger for. Luckily the grip has a AA adapter cartridge so I've been using that with some NiCads.

We're headed out to Uluru in 10 days and I'm starting to stress at the possibility something goes wrong photographically.

Also thanks :) I did just change the avatar *lol* Found the shot when I was digging through the old files looking for my ghost graveyard photos.

@azirasson I think Carlita covered it with the user-manual download. :) But, I use a mix of AF and MF, so just leave it on whatever you want - neither one will hurt your lenses. The back (thumb) wheel is for the f-stop (aperture) and the front (top - finger) wheel is for shutter speed, assuming you're in manual mode.

@Neda Well good luck. I just wanted to get that question out there for anyone that could help. I just started on photography so I generally don't know a thing about it. =P
