Based on what I've read, I like it. Seems to offer a great platform for a beginner to the DSLR world. Your real investment will be in lenses, so purchasing an affordable body to start with is smart. I have actually recommended it to some friends considering entering the world. You might consider www.dpreview.com for some reviews. They seem to offer some great, unbiased reviews and are usually very timely.

what are some good lens recommendations?

I have one. I LOVE IT! It is great for beginners as well as professionals. If you're just entering the world of DSLR's this has a "?" button that tells you what EVERYTHING does. It has a guide mode. If you're a seasoned photogapher no need to use the guide mode or "?". It takes wonderful pictures. It has a view finder and live mode. I've never really used live mode so I don't know how the performance is while using it, but it has it none the less. Long battery life. Tons of Lenses to buy. It's light weight, and compact. I adore it.

I have the D3000, very similar. I just wish it had a better metering capabilities and interval shooting.

I've heard nothing but great stuff on it.

I got the D3100 for Christmas. This is my first DSLR and I'm loving it. That is what brought me here - to learn more about how to use it. My son in law apparently researched cameras for a month before choosing this one because of the reviews.

Sorry I can't be more help but so far, I'm pretty happy with the choice!
