Using old lenses?

February 27th, 2010
I bought an adapter to use my Canon lenses for my old Canon AE-1 film camera on my new Canon Rebel XSi. I'm able to take pictures, but they're coming out fuzzy. Here's an example, and I didn't use a glamour filter or tweak the soft focus:

Has anyone had success with this and do you have any tips for improving image quality? I'm 100% digital now and would hate to have to spend the money to replace all the good lenses I have that are just sitting around gathering dust.

Thanks!

I'm going out this weekend with my Pentax k-m and some manual lenses. Will let you know how I get on!

Well, today I was using a Pentax Asahi 28-80mm manual lens. I had a few issues with focusing but I can check to see if it's soft-focused by zooming in loads on the image on my camera's back screen.

For example, this one here was very slightly out of focus when I zoomed http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab76/mazcam/_IGP2831.jpg

So I rejigged the focus and got this: http://365project.org/madmazda86/365/2010-03-06

Here's a couple more:

Also, I don't know if your Canon has the same thing but my Pentax has a little diamond that shows up in the viewfinder when the image is in focus, regardless of whether I have a manual or digital lens mounted to the camera. But that's only any good if you want the centre part of the picture in focus. If you're trying something more unusual then I imagine that wouldn't work and you'd have to go off your eyes alone.

I hope that's useful in some way - your original picture you posted, if you had that on infinity focus then there's no reason why it shouldn't have come out nice and sharp. Is it an official adapter you bought or a third party one? When I was looking for my Pentax M42 screw-to-bayonet adapter I was warned that some of the third party ones don't let you focus at infinity because they interfere with the lens-camera distance. Or something (I didn't really understand it all too well and I managed to get a proper Pentax adapter anyway XD).

Either way, I hope you manage to use all your old stuff - saves sooo much money on new lenses!

I had that problem when I first switched from my film Pentax to my DSLR Pentax. I decided on the Pentax DSLR so that I would not have to buy new lens. I am using older Asashi lens and found that there were two things.

One, the metering setting on the DSLR. If your metering is set on "Point" the areas away from the center of the field of vision may blur.

Two, I had my eyes checked. I need glasses.

If you are using a manual focus lens you can focus on the subject in the center, then while still holding the shutter button down move the camera to recompose the shot.
