New Camera Suggestions

January 16th, 2011
About a year ago I purchased a Canon PowerShot SX120 IS. It is a nifty little camera with great quality, although, recently I have been thinking about expanding my collection. I want to start fresh in the new year with a new camera. I was thinking something like a Digital DSLR, but something that won't burn a hole in my pocket. Since I am a noob I have no idea where to start.
Feel free to give your input on your favourite cameras or the ones you use now.

Any Suggestions?

I also have a canon sx120is that I got a year or so ago, and again, I also wanted to expand my collection, so I got a nikon d5000. I wanted to get a canon, but the nikon's are just way more user friendly, and the d5000 is an awesome camera. You can do just about anything with it. I think transitioning from the sx120is to the d5000 was super easy. If you know how to use all the controls on your canon, it's really easy to figure out on the d5000 too. Of course I am a little biased considering I'm super attached to my d5000 :)

@sarahbear9995 I was actually looking at the Nikons today. I have heard good reviews on them. They're also not super expensive. Thank you for the input, I'll definitely put it to use when i'm making a purchase.

Nikon's the way to go if you just want the least expensive, new, basic DSLR.

The D3000 is around $500. D5000 around $650
The T1i/T2i cost about $650/$800 now for Canon.

Now - it might even be wise to not just buy the cheapest DSLR to get a DSLR. Think about what kind of photography you want to do. Think which lenses from whichever company might serve you best. Feel how they are in your hands, buttons, and features you want.

Video or not? You can buy older semi professional models from brands used or new and are cheaper if you're taking straight photos.

I went from a Lumix FZ30 (used 5 years) to a Canon T2i.

of course the pentax has the higher user rating... because well I love my K-X... it also comes in fun colours for those who are not afraid of a red, green, pink, white or other camera... of course a coloured camera means you are not serious... but they are HUGE in japan...

@infonographist Those are the cameras that I have been looking at. A lot of people that I know have gotten the T2i and said they loved it. Thank you for the input and the comparison articles. They are a great help. @icywarm I love the orange pentax K-x. Very cool looking. @vikdaddy Thank you for the input!

@katieamo give the kx or kr (if you are willing to speed a little more) a try. No one regrets it. It is a smaller camera, so you are more apt to take it out with you. It is killer in low light. The pentax glass is the best in the world. The pancake lenses on the front of a kx gives you a killer light weight package. But that is just my two cents. Oh and that comment about the shake resistance not always working, well it has SR, the other cameras don't, they put it in the lens.

Honestly for me it is all about form, you need to physically pick up the camera and see how you like. Don't get talked into one camera or another. Hold it at the store, walk around with it, try taking pictures with each.

Things to consider the 'thumb' wheel on the canon's, the button lay-out of the nikons. I would also consider a micro 4/3 camera or pen or EVIL. They are all the same thing, their bodies are much smaller than an DSRL, but they take great photos.

I know so much to consider. I'll help you out, there is no WRONG choice, each is a series of compromises. Just don't let the guys in the store talk you into something you don't need or that doesn't fit well in your hands, if you think it feels 'funny' you will not use it and it will be a waste, there are too many options to take one that doesn't 'fit'
